BW1: Combat Patrol: Exploring Out of Bounds
This time I am exploring parts of the area outside of the level boundaries of Combat Patrol (the first level in Battalion Wars on the GameCube). The Tundran helicoper and the WF recon at the start of the level are not part of the regular gameplay and were edited in to make exploring the map easier.
Interesting trivia: The two bridges near the camp have collision, even the narrow one. All the tents can be destroyed, and there seem to be 3 different types of tents. Tracks in the snow lead around the mountain to the two depots, and there is a path you can take to to reach Gorgi's tank column. The area aroun Gorgi's tank column is actually much bigger than what can be seen in the cutscene, which makes me wonder if the terrain was made for a different kind of mission.
To be able to move outside of the boundaries and not be teleported back, the _Level.xml file for this mission needs to be modified. You need to modify the size and position of a MapZone that has the ZONETYPE_MISSIONBOUNDARY type. I recommend picking one that isn't rotated, i.e. the first few values in the mMatrix attribute are 1.0 or 0.0. The fourth to last and second to last values in mMatrix are the x/y positions respectively, set them both to 0 so the zone is centered around the middle of the map. Set the width and length of the zone (first and third value in the mSize attribute) to a high value, like 3000 or 4000. This should work for all other missions too, not just Combat Patrol.
