Cactus McCoy the game brings you Cactus McCoy, the cactus. Well, granted, an anthropomorphic cactus who was turned into such by a curse placed on a mystical artifact he was paid to retrieve by a shady looking four-armed man, but that's besides the point. Cactus McCoy the game is a side-scrolling platformer that gives you control of aforementioned Cactus McCoy (the character of course) as he punches, shoots, whips, slashes, and smashes his way through many different cliché wild-west levels.

The game is great fun, both to play and to look at. Gameplay is the heart of every game, and this one has it in spades. The mechanics of the game are simple enough to master, and the first few levels are relatively simple, giving you a nice, slow, and gentle difficulty curve. But once the levels get difficult, boy do they get difficult.

The level nine in the game puts you back onto a train (because really, just how many different wild-west cliché areas can there possibly be?) speeding across the Deadridge Railway. It's a whole lot tougher than previous train levels, and the enemies are a whole lot tougher.

You'll find a bunch of new enemies here, many of which are armed with weapons that can make quick work of our intrepid chlorophyll-powered hero. The most notable of these would be the Gatling gun. Oh yes, the Gatling gun, you sweet, mechanical marvel of fast-shooting, death-spraying, deliverer of hot lead you. And you even get to use it, provided you manage to get it off an enemigo. Fun times, fun times. In fact, prying it off the hands of an enemigo is related to one of the challenges, but we'll get to that later.

The first challenge is to "De-Thrown" the train, and I'm sure that pun was most definitely intended. Like a previous train level where you had to chuck all the luggage out, you have to do the same with chairs here. This time around, because you can't use the chairs as stepping stones, you don't have to worry about accidentally throwing chairs off the train thus preventing you from accessing certain areas. So grab all those chairs and get them out as quickly as you can.

The second is a time challenge, as usual. You have to beat the level in two minutes and thirty seconds, not an easy feat when there are dozens of enemigos on the train with many different weapons for your destruction. Tear gas anyone?

The third challenge is tricky. You have to beat the six flamethrower-wielding enemigos. The catch is that you have to use lanterns, and as seen in Brimstone Mine, lanterns don't last very long. So you have to aim carefully, and use them conservatively if you want to be able to get this challenge.

As aforementioned, the Gatling gun plays a role in the challenge. You have to kill 12 of them with your bare fists. Who brings a fist to a gun fight? Cactus McCoy does, and with luck, you'll be able to grab one of those guns from them and go on a maniacal spree tearing enemigos apart after they say hello to your little friend.

The fifth challenge is perhaps the trickiest. At the start of the level, you'll find a freight car full of TNT. You have to blow it up using a grenade, but to do so, you'll have to scour the entire train looking for a set of grenades. But once you do, stand back and watch the fireworks. It's glorious.

That's all for the Deadridge Railway, keep watching for Sunset Gulch!
