Calamity Cave loves to try to murder you. Its truly single minded in that regard but highly enjoyable. The level starts off near the entrance to the deeper portion of the cave, forcing the player to set off some TNT to blow clear debris. This explosion unfortunately causes a collapse within the cave. During this first section huge boulders of squishing doom fall down from all over the place. They don't seem to do any damage to the Enemigos (unless they are thrown at them) but they do cause Cactus McCoy considerable pain. For the life of me I couldn't get past the first part of Calamity Cave without taking some damage from these things. I had to spend a bit of time in this section of Calamity Cave to get 100% completion so I suggest to anyone that is going to do the same to get used to the idea of being annoyed.

For example the boulders combined with the collapsing platforms make navigation somewhat annoying because if you're not knocked off a platform by a boulder you'll surely spend the duration of said platform's life span stunned and unable to move causing you to fall over. As a somewhat petty measure of revenge I broke boulders whenever it was possible which led me to unexpectedly unlocking an achievement.

So after clearing the "rock falls, everyone dies" section of the cave I was introduced to two new elements; spikes that shoot out of the walls and floor and giant spiked metal balls that really hurt. These obstacles function a lot like other standard deadly traps in platfomers, in order to get around them you need good timing and precise movement. I really like the animation on the spiked metal balls, they look like something that will totally destroy you. The spikes are sort of underwhelming in appearance but they are still spikes so they hurt a bit.

Also in this part of Calamity Cave there aren't as many ledges for you to jump on to, a lot of how you'll get around is by jumping and grabbing things to hang on to only for you to jump over to something else to hang on to. This section doesn't have a bottom so if you find yourself falling there is a very good chance you'll end up free falling to your death. That being said it isn't a terribly difficult challenge.

There after completing the bottomless cave I came across...A BEAR PIT! Its truly a great swarm fight, just wave after wave of Enemigos dressed as bears trying to kill you. It has a certain Will Ferrell feel to it, trying to kill a bear. I don't know or pretend to know why the Enemiegos dressed up like bears in ruinous cavern to ambush Cactus McCoy, but they did, and it is a highly entertaining fight!

Next time on Cactus McCoy 2 the second boss fight of the game...
