129The year is 46 BCE, there may be a new calendar, but Dictator Julius Caesar, is an aging man.
Caesar has declared a series of military veterans colonies be established in the recently conquered lands of the Helvetia (modern day Switzerland).
You have been selected for the privilege of establishing one such colony for military veterans.
This particular colony is to be called Pennelucos, and will be positioned where the mountain pass from the Alps descends into a plateau at the south-eastern edge of the great lake Lacus Lemanus (modern day lake Geneva).
Although the region as a whole is ill suited to richer crops, the riverside does provide some land suitable for farming.
Alternatively, the river and lake are both blessed with bountiful fish.
Connecting the northern region of Transalpine Gaul and Italia, the road through this region should see much trade in coming years.
Trade to which the colony is expected to contribute. The surrounding mountains are rich in timber, iron and marble; resources which are perpetually in demand.
Expect to provide supply of both fine arms and marble, frequently, and in good measure.
Some conflict with whatever remnants of the local barbarian tribes remain hidden away in the mountain's uppermost reaches when the colony is first set up is to be expected.
However, it is to the north that the more significant and long term threats are anticipated.
The colony is expected to contribute to the empire's northern defense against, and eventual push into, Germania, until it too is brought under our rule.
