Mason is sent to Vorkuta, a Russian Gulag and spends 2 years there. While there, he makes friends with a Russian World War 2 vetran named Viktor Reznov. They plan an escape. They fake a fight which a guard breaks up and beats Reznov, then Mason kills him with a rock, Reznov takes the keys and they and the other prisoners escape the area, including a huge prisoner named Sergei Kozin. They fight their way out and destroy guard towers, Mason climbs a tower when they reach the communications building. Reznov makes a speech as Mason destroys the buildings in front of him with a slingshot firing flaming scrap. They then fight through more guards and shoot down a helicopter with a harpoon gun, many prisoners and guards, including Sergei are killed in the fighting, Mason takes a minigun and uses it to push through until the guards use teargas, Mason and Reznov then attempt to escape by motorcycle, pursued by guards before stealing a truck with a machine gun, Mason holds them off as Reznov drives until a train comes which Mason jumps on. He then urges Reznov to follow, but Reznov says that he only intended freedom for Mason, and he leads the guards away as Mason escapes on the train.
