Turns out, I wasn't finished with the American campaign yet. And it didn't actually make a save at the start of the next level. In fact, checkpoints in this game seem problematic at best. Whether they trigger or not it a crap shoot, and they often trigger in a way that gets you instantly killed - as happened to me again today. At least both times it's happened so far I was able to work out of it.

And again, we have a section where you're just better off not actually playing the game. Sitting and waiting for the timer rather than attacking the tanks. Letting your teammates clear the area rather than doing it yourself. It's a game that's most effective when you DON'T play it, and that's also a problem. I'm really not enjoying this as much as I had before. Even if that was a cool, intense scene, it's such a forced, take tension that it falls apart. If the tanks weren't just spanwed in by destroying one, if you actually DID have to take them out so you didn't get overwhelmed, that'd be one thing. But they're just there to give you something to do, and spawning one just makes another appear. So your best bet is to just wait them out for the win.
