Despite its Saving Private Ryan-esque beginning, Call of Duty WW2's single-player campaign feels more like taking part in an old-fashioned war movie than diving deep into a gritty realistic take on the historical conflict in question. While the superficially outlandish Wolfenstein 2 had more meaningful things to say about the ideological clashes which set the world aflame in 1939-1945, there's something quaint and comforting about the comparatively rose-tinted Hollywood treatment employed by Sledgehammer Games. If nothing else, Call of Duty's deep-seated conservatism is presented more overtly and honestly - not to mention with considerably more charm - than in the modern adventures of Captain Price and his grim-faced band of brothers.
