Call Of The Zone - #142: "Lost To The Zone" V
There has been a change to my Faction relations, but it is not good. The Mercenaries are now at war with the Loners. They had been my most dependable ally in Garbage. It is dawn but still not enough light to attack the Monolith. I continue to walk around the Military Base and from the roof of the main building, I find some Monolith far to the east, walking on the main road. Using the better scope of my FN F2000, I start shooting at them only to discover they are in a gunbattle with a larger Bandit squad on the hill south of them. The Bandits win with my help and despite them being my enemies too, I decide to let them loot the Monolith and go on their way.
I leave the Military Base and go survey the battlefield. While there a Military squad arrives, and I return to the Base. Finally, I am ready to go to the Monolith in the Swamp but this time I decide to go alone without any Companions. I go to meet the Military at the camp at the Claw Anomaly and without warning I'm suddenly under a Controller attack. The mind pull is done on me once, but I am able to get my bearing, facing it and blasting it with my shotgun before it gets another chance. This time there is one soldier waiting to meet me. I make an important manual save after the Controller attack and momentarily look at the Claw Anomaly with my detector. The soldier runs over the hill towards the Log Cabin but is instantly killed and I get to the rise, expecting the Monolith to be at the far end of the Swamp as before but they are directly below me, and I am killed right away.
I did not expect them to be that close to me. Having never had a mission like this in Call of the Zone before, I though the conditions were more rigid. I don't know if it was the time spend with the Controller or fooling around with my detector that allowed them to move in closer, with the soldier and I being oblivious to their movement. Once dead I watch the Monolith come over the hill and gather at the camp, lighting the fire and not going farther. That seems to be their destination. An Emission arrives, which tells me that any attack by me would have been ruined and would have been unsuccessful no matter what. There was no way to beat the Monolith and escape the Emission.
