callisto protocol was met with a very disappointed reception, when it came out. People wanted Dead Space and it just wasn't what people got in the end......WHAT IF! I told you that There is a History that goes back further them just Dead Space but the whole Legacy of the team and company.

We can't get to the Callisto Protocol without peeling back the flesh and understanding the man and the team behind the game.
Striking distance studios headed by some former Visceral devs and one of the Dead Space headers Glen Schofield.
Glen has built his career on an impressive list of games before Callisto, jumping from studio to studio, company to company until 2003 working and joining with EA Redwood shores on the iconic Lord of the Rings Return of the kings video game.

It appears that he sticks with RedWood studios as a leading producer and Director for some time,
Redwood eventually changed their name now to the mostly known by Visceral Games after Dead Spaces success let them become one of the biggest studios within the EA family.
For the video's sack we will call them Visceral, Known for making some of EAs biggest projects and ports, My Sims, Simpsons Game, the Tiger Woods games, and James bond but most notably 007 everything or Nothing and the much loved Russia with love, which is where this madness begins.


Russia with Love continued the Legacy of the well loved James bond games of the ps2 era, with this being the last that Visceral would be working on.
With interesting names placed in the credits here, Glen Schofield as the producer, but here we meet Multiplayer and the important one Combat Producer Steve Papoutsis who will later become Glens Chief developer during Callisto protocol.
With Ian Milham as the lead environmental artist, all three will come together to head the production of Dead Space but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Also other names too Ben Walker who was the Combat designer as well who became the design director in striking force and lead designer in Dead space 2 and 3, and Bret Robbins who became the lead Creative director for Dead space.
Glen has a team and a strong team he has kept and assembled over the last decade, and this is just the beginning.


2005s Russia with love is a special game because of the in house engine Visceral was building for themselves. Seen throughout even in 2004s 007 Everything or Nothing not as advanced, used and modified until Dead space 3, which side note just look at 007 next to any moment throughout Dead Spaces history and you see these engines share something familiar (James bond grapple and free fall).
Russia with love is a third person shooter like its counterpart before it, but with an added focus on well ... .focus.
The player was about to hold down a button while aiming to focus on weaknesses like grenades to explode, ropes to shoot and limbs, killing enemies instantly or opening them up for hand to hand combat.
This Engines ability and a satisfying limb to limb based combat will prove very important leading into their next big hit Tiger woods tour 2006 ...WHAT GET OUT.

The Godfather in 2006 made quite the splash on release, it was an open world gangster game that brought something new to the GTA clones of the era.
Set before and during the first FIlm, you play as Aldo, a custom character building his way through the family.
With you having to take out gangs and extort business for money, this is where we see this engine from Russia with love come into full swing,well ... .swing of a bat maybe.
With a few tweeks Visceral gave us the BlackHand system, the players are able to go into stores and combat with free aim and targeting of enemies.
Hand to hand is a highlight in the game depending on the job, with a big focus on Hand to hand melee fights, Godfather has the player watching the enemies movement and swings dodging accordingly to the enemies next attack (seems familiar Callisto).
The player is fully able to control the pace and speed of swings with the analog stick, leaving speedy players looking like Rockem Sockem, lighting out the enemy fast.
But played with the pace and intention of visceral, this system makes the world feel more tangible to play around in.
This precision in the the gameplay doesn't stop just in the hand to hand, much like seen in 007 From Russia with love the focus mechanic makes a sneaky return, allow Aldo to choose where to shoot, Shooting knees will send them to the ground, hands will drop weapons, heads will kill them out right, every limb has its purpose and every shot has its meaning to kill or gain fear in the rackets you over take.
