I love this game. Just like playing Dead Space for the first time. It doesn’t do anything particularly better or worse. But that’s fine because the original Dead space was so good and games haven’t really got much better since then. The monsters are disgusting and horrifying. The story is good. The gameplay follows a linear path as opposed to the back tracking in dead space. I thought I wouldn’t like this but it really does work. The only problem with this mechanic is if you hit cross-roads, you might choose the path forward without realising and miss your opportunity to explore the path that you didn’t take. It can be quite annoying when you want to explore everywhere for items and then you end up shutting a door behind you and auto-saving.
The game focuses on Melee combat which I think is great for keeping the intensity up as you are always close up rather than keeping them away with your guns. There is a good dodge mechanic so you have to use skill instead of mashing the hit button. Its fun enough that I concentrated on upgrading my baton throughout the game. Guns were pretty much left default.
There is also a telekinesis ability where you can put up enemies and send them flying over ledges or into coincidently placed spike walls. This is a cheap way of getting a kill but really satisfying and a nice change, but it’s not a free pass as you have limited use and there aren’t always traps about.
The weapons are disappointing. Where dead space had inventive weapons, Callisto has very basic weapons. Even the later weapon pick-ups are just slightly more powerful versions of previous guns. So, you get 2 pistols, 2 shotguns, and an automatic rifle. Nothing else. It’s a good job the melee and telekinesis are great to use as you won’t need to use the weapons much.
The enemy variety is great. Although they do overuse the Siamese twin boss. The first was a real slog and took me loads of attempts. It rinsed all of my ammo and I felt really lucky to do it because you can only defeat it with weapons and if I didn’t save up enough ammo before the fight (which I didn’t know was coming) I think it would have been impossible to beat because there are no new ammo spawns.
Pretty soon after beating this boss, I collected as much ammo as I could, and then this boss appeared again, s I had to use all my ammo again. This happened another 2 times. I don’t know what the developer’s obsession with this boss is. It’s a really long and boring fight every time and even when you know exactly how to beat it, it doesn’t get easier and it still takes multiple attempts. Once was definitely enough.
The last boss was similar in difficulty. You barely have any time to pick up the ammo around the room as he runs after you and if you don’t dodge in time it’s a one shot kill.
The last thing that annoyed me was the loading times. It’s a fault of the PS4 hardware rather than the game, but boy did I feel it in this game after the multiple boss deaths and having to watch a black loading screen for 40-50 seconds every time.
I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the game and it felt great to play a triple A game with no bloat. Not too long.
Full of set pieces to keep things interesting. I’ve seen some reviews saying marking it down because its not much of upgrade from Dead Space. I see this as a complement. That was a 10/10 game and it hasn’t gone worse with time.
