The Duchess of Cornwall visited the Royal Hospital Chelsea, meeting the in-pensioners before taking the salute at the 321st Founders Day Parade.

She was given a tour of the Margaret Thatcher Infirmary this morning where she met staff and pensioners including 94 year-old veteran John Ley who she presented with a gift

Every year since 1980 a member of the Royal family has taken the salute at the Founders Day Parade.

It is always held on a day close to the 29th May - the birthday of Charles II and the date of his restoration as King in May 1660.

The day is also known as Oak Apple Day as it commemorates the escape of the future King Charles II after the Battle of Worcester (1651) when he hid in an oak tree to avoid capture by the Parliamentary forces. All members of the Parade wear oak leaves to commemorate this event. This will be the 321st Founders Day.
