A British soldier who single-handedly fought off enemy fighters in Afghanistan said he was "overwhelmed" to be awarded the Military Cross today but said he wanted to dedicate it to his whole battalion.

Lance Corporal Lawrence Kayser, 27, was one of four serving soldiers from The 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment who were recognised for their bravery at the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, while another was awarded posthumously.

Corporal Alexander Guy, 37, was killed in action in Afghanistan in June last year.

His wife Emma received the Military Cross on his behalf which was awarded for his brave actions as he died while leading his section to assist a group of Afghan soldiers pinned down by enemy fire during an insurgent ambush in the Nad-e Ali District of Helmand Province.

Mrs Guy was accompanied by the soldier's mother Aileen Guy, father Andrew Guy and uncle Alec Wilson, and said they were "so proud" to be there in honour of him.

"We are so proud of Alex today and we've had wonderful support from the regiment," they said.

"The Queen asked how long he had been serving and said she was particularly pleased to present the Military Cross in person.

"She said it was a very proud day for the family and for The Royal Anglian Regiment."
