Even though a consequence of economic and military power, Western culture has been a model of progress for the rest of the world. But now many see the West in crisis and liberal democracy no longer the undisputed ideal. The values of democracy were easy to endorse when it created the world's most successful economies. But as the West loses its economic advantage, where will the world look to shape its future? Will China’s authoritarian development model replace the former consensus around free market economics? And is Russia’s rejection of decadent liberalism an indicator of an alternative politics?
Writer-in-chief at The Draft Phil Collins, eminent LGBT activist and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell and China reporter and broadcast editor at the Spectator Cindy Yu debate whether the strengths of liberal democracy win through and survive the economic eclipse of the West. Linda Yueh hosts.
