Capcom Arcade Stadium (1941: Counter Attack, Mercs (JP), Mega Twins) playthrough
Three more games today. Three games that, by this point, Capcom has figured out how to make entertaining quarter eaters. The frustration of super cheap enemies is gone though the difficulty remains. Graphics are flashier. Continues put you right back in the action right away, encouraging you to pump more money into the machines.
1941: Counter Attack: This was an interesting one. It kept some of the mechanics I really liked from 1943. It has not a draining health meter, but some hit points that you have to go through before you die. The power ups are once again on a timer, and you can end up spending most of the game with them. Plus, they don't go away when you die. Even the wingmen powerup can take several more hits in this, though they will be destroyed. However, I think this game's a bit too busy. Sometimes things are hard to see. And it swings you side to side sometimes for the level. It's a good game, shorter than the others, and I had a lot of fun with it. Though I still prefer 1943.
Mercs: This is another one that only has the Japanese ROM. It's the sequel to Commando and plays much the same, though you don't just go forward in it. This one has up to three players at once, and a variety of weapons that you can power up. As well as vehicles. Still suffers from some of the same problems - that you have to run toward danger to shoot it. But for the most part, it's a fun game. The fact that your weapons stay after death is a huge help. Another fun game.
Mega Twins: I was worried about this one. More of a platformer, with schmup sections, than anything else. Very cute graphics (and one where the NA version contained some censorship). Some of the text was too fast to read, and there's a bit of cheapness, especially in the end boss. But overall, it's a fairly cute game. Not really my style, but I can definitely see how people could have fun with this one as well. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
