I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, fan of retro games, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EACH of the video games in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, and are not meant to be definitive, in depth reviews; this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey itself. From Mario games to the Halo series, from arcade games to Commodore 64, PC games to the NES and Sega Genesis, Playstation to the Xbox, let's play those classic retro games that we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Jay's Thoughts
Racing can be a very fun form of competition. In a way, racing is a personal challenge, as its really up to you to go as fast and efficiently as you can, regardless of what the other guy is doing. And in the end, the winner of a race is typically the personal who has achieved their personal best and improved their own abilities. Of course, in Carmaggedon II... none of that matters.
Carmaggedon II throws out any semblance of restraint and places you in a heavily armored death machine. Sure you're "technically" racing. But really, your goal is to mash, brutalize, and destroy your competition, in addition to any hapless civilians who happen to get in your way. And indeed, it is the wanton and bloody slaughter of pedestrians that got the game in a lot of trouble when it was released. Some versions of the game swap out the humans for zombies, thus somehow making all the violence acceptable. But even if you're nominally killing zombies, it doesn't matter, the destruction is clear.
There's something wholly satisfying about a racing game that lets you crash through a mall, mowing down shoppers, and then nail one of your fellow racers against a wall, destroying their car in the process. As you can guess, I didn't get much racing done in this racing game, but I had a hell of a time.
In the end, Carmageddon II is nominally a racing game, but it plays more like an urban destruction sandbox. As a result of its fun and easy gameplay, and the fact that it lets the player have free reign to play however they like, I think this is a fun game that most would enjoy!
➙ Must You Play It?
A solid racing game that lets you get out some aggression on the road. The controls are simple and the blood and violence is explicit and rewarding. Sometimes it can be hard to find your opponents on the track and it can be a little more difficult than you think to navigate around effectively but when you mess up, you usually end up smashing into buildings with awesome effects, and so, whatever. If you're looking for a non-traditional racing game, look no further!
