I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, fan of retro games, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EACH of the video games in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, and are not meant to be definitive, in depth reviews; this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey itself. From Mario games to the Halo series, from arcade games to Commodore 64, PC games to the NES and Sega Genesis, Playstation to the Xbox, let's play those classic retro games that we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Jay's Thoughts
Another World (known at Out of this World in North America) is an interesting and unique combination of action and adventure, with animation that seems well ahead of its time. In Another World you are a young scientist who, due to some freak accident during a lightning storm, ends up being teleported to parallel universe inhabited by all kinds of nasty enemies. Pretty standard sci-fi stuff really.
At its core, the game plays like a mix of a Sierra-adventure game and a Prince of Persia platformer. Much of the game is separated into puzzles that require you to either avoid enemies in precise ways or use a few elements in the environment to move forward. Beyond that, there is some running and jumping to be had, and in much the same way that Prince of Persia was well animated, this game is too. In fact, the animation behind this game is what truly sets it apart from competitors.
Rather than using sprite-based graphics, Another World uses a vector-based graphic system to represent complex animations. The result of this technology is that the game is animated in a way that seems well ahead of its time, with remarkably fluid action sequences and lots of variety in scenes and action.
Beyond the animation, the game eventually does feature a few action packed laser gun sequences requiring you to get into firefights with alien guards of an underground prison complex.
All in all, this game is a fun and unique combination of a variety of elements that culminate in a great action-adventure game. Though I had fun with this one, I definitely do think that the difficulty and finicky nature to some of the puzzles (much in the style of Sierra puzzles) would frustrate rather than entertain some gamers. As a result, I think Another World will best appeal to a niche of gamers who enjoy challenging but well-done adventure games. I therefore give this one a soft recommendation.
➙ Must You Play It?
Another World offers a remarkably well-animated cinematic adventure which was definitely ahead of its time. Though the puzzles can be a little finicky, combining both Sierra-style logic sometimes and Prince of Persia-style jumping puzzles other times, the animation and imagination here is superb and this was a very neat game to play. Its finicky nature mean it may not be a game that everyone enjoys, hence I recommend it cautiously. But I had fun. Might be worth a shot for you!
