It figures that I'd die mostly because I forgot about stuff, but also because it had been a pretty busy weekend and I wasn't really in the mode for this game (in which many things need to be remembered to play well). Stuff happens!

This is a super-great game, and I'd even consider it a good example of roguelike evolution over the years. In my opinion, one of the greatest possibilities that can come out of roguelikes is producing a vast world to explore: many classical roguelikes keep to their dungeons, but a lot can be done if you provide an environment where you go almost anywhere, and more or less gives you things to do (or at least search for) in each area. Caves of Qud is technically more classical in this aspect simply because of the aesthetic choice to go screen-wise, but Cataclysm wouldn't be as good if the view wasn't player-centric.
