(CCPlays) Cold Waters Dot MOD | My Stupidity Ran Us Aground | "High Noon" Mission NATO 2000
Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters w/ DotMod.
We all make mistakes. Tactical mistakes, strategic mistakes, etc. Today, I'am showing you one of my worst blunders: I ran my sub aground, and while I did kill 5 out of 6 targets, the last one got away.
Thumbnail: Yes, that's my poor 688.
The time is an alternate 2000. China had just conducted missile strikes and special forces raids on the US Naval Base in Okinawa, Japan, and Subic Bay, Phillippines. It is believed a special forces raid will be hitting Guam soon. Hold a blocking position and destroy the subs.
NOTE: This mission is not difficult to do "well", but perfect? That's a different problem.
-----
I have a 688 Flight III, and after initializing the sensors and finding plenty of water, I drove to near test depth and started sorting out the signals. However, one of the subs starting using active sonar, and it detected just enough to shoot first and ask questions later. At that time, I identified five suspected PLAN submarines: 2x Han, 1 x Ming, and 2 x Improved Kilo. So I started sending torpedoes downrange while keeping to max of 15 kt to keep the wires intact. Then as those hit, I shoot more. I also fired off a decoy, then another, to "suck" the hostile torpedoes away from me.
Then one at a time, the PLAN subs died from my torpedoes.
Upon killing the final detected PLAN sub, a Han, he had counterfired two torpedoes that may come a bit close. I chose a vector to the south/southwest, and went to all ahead flank. I didn't recognize for a moment the warning about "50 m under the keel", then I hit reverse, but it's too late. The bow and sensor dome crashed into the underwater hill, which fortunately has plenty of mud and sediment, but one tube and the entire VLS system is ruined, not to mention major leak in the torpedo compartment, and we're... stuck. I had to order reverse thrust to get us out of that mess, then power ascent our way up as we were still near test depth. Then damcon had to deal with the flooding.
This gave plenty of time for the final PLAN sub to sneak away.
I forgot to read my terrain map and chose a direction for convenience, not safety.
Don't do what I did. Learn from my mistake(s). Don't repeat them.
What should I have done instead? Evade to southeast where the water is deeper, tried to split the difference between the two diverging torpedoes, try to evade above the layer... there are lots of possibilities than smashing myself into an underwater hill.
That is all.
IRL, USS San Francisco, an old LA-class boat, crashed into an underwater mountain near Guam back in 2005. But she survived and made it back to Guam, where emergency repairs allowed her to transit back to the US. She was out of commission for 3 years laid up in a drydock and had to get a donor nose from another 688 being retired. She served 8 more years before being retired.
