(CCPlays) Sinking Nimitz | Cold Waters DotMod | 1984 Soviet "Priority Target" mission
Welcome to Captain Chang Plays (CCP) Cold Waters w/ DotMod.
After playing NATO several ways, it's time for me to play the Red side a bit more, and today, I play the big one: I am going after the Nimitz in the single mission "Priority Target".
Though to make it easier on myself, I'm choosing the Akula, which has no less than FOUR 650mm tubes for the big boy, the 65-73 long-range wake homing torp, specially designed to kill US carriers. Even the Sierra only have two of those tubes.
WIth quite a bit of accelerated time and speed-up footage, I managed to chop the time down to just over 20 minutes, but this actually took over 40 minutes actual play time.
The process is actually quite simple. I dove to 600m, where I am invulnerable, as NATO ASW torpedoes implode when they hit 500m. I can be going at flank 35 kt and they can't touch me.
What's even better, I can pop the USET-80 torpedoes at 599m, and the big 65-73 torpedoes at 479m. Pop up, get the torpedoes off, dive back down. They can't touch me.
On the other hand, I definitely need more practice, as my hit rate with these wake homers are pretty horrible. Activation needs to occur earlier to give the torpedo enough time to climb from the transit depth to the surface if I want to launch from max depth.
But I did sink the Nimitz and all but one of its escorts. They did make it easy though. One just sat in the water, the other could have escaped but turned back.
