THE HIGH TEA PROJECT
I have always fascinated with the dream like work in movies. I remember when I first “Wall-E”, it sparked my curiosity and lead me into the world of CGI. Always wondering about the process of creating such a wonderful stuff and making my own one day. It has been 4 years since I started learning the computer graphics, I learned a lot but It never satisfied my eager to learn more.
I started this project during my studies in Vancouver Film School. I was looking for something that will challenge me in each and every perspective. While I was getting different ideas, I came up with a very simple stuff “making a table with a cup of tea” but I wanted to do bit different. My instructor suggested me to go out and explore If I need more idea. So, I did, it was the first time when I first found High tea and the culture behind it. The wide variety of stuffs and a classic look made me curious behind the process of creating them in CGI. I was sure that this is the type of thing I am looking for.
While looking for reference, I found a classic interior with a view of Big Ben through the window. That’s the Library Lounge of Marriott Hall, London where they serve afternoon tea every weekend. I looked for it and decided to make the similar looking image in CGI. Having a reference in front of me and trying to match it as close as possible is another challenge.
The most challenging task is to create realistic looking sandwich, cake, scone, and so on. Due to the short duration of project, it’s pretty hard to hand sculpt all of them because of the time it takes to create a single piece. So, I decided to use Photogrammetry (a process of creating 3D model using multiple photographs), this helped me to reduce time from 1 month to few days. This is major go in this project, all the modelling task was done within 2 months and I gave next 2 months for shading and texturing. Lighting is another thing I have to look for. I used portal light to achieve realistic lighting with a great disadvantage of heavy render time. Using Subsurface Scattering for almost all the stuffs on table leads me to the great render time. Although all of it came under control by using PBR and UDIM workflow, to help reduce the Material and Texture count. I also faked a lot of stuffs in post process like caustics, soft shadows. Used custom light passes to fill extra areas wherever needed.
At the end everything worked out well, got some trouble, failed many time but all of this give me such an experience that I will never forgot. Always having a reference picture in front of me gave me an eye to catch details of real world and achieve the same in CGI.
