As per Karl Schäfer's instructions, Nathan "Nate" Drake is led by Tibetan mountaineer Tenzin into the caves near Schäfer and Tenzin's village in an effort to find the remains of Schäfer's expedition to find Shambhala and the Cintamani Stone said to be there.

The two make their way through the caves, each saving the other's life on occasion. As the two get further into the cave, they become aware of something watching them, and also come across some dead wolves that have been almost torn apart. As the two advance even deeper into the caves, they are attacked by a Guardian disguised as a yeti. Nate uses a P08-9mm taken from one of the bodies from Schäfer's expedition to weaken the beast, and when Tenzin stabs it with his kukri blade, the Guardian flees.

After regaining their composure, Tenzin and Nate continue through the caves, eventually coming to a large staircase.
