Cheap studio softbox lighting, backdrop screen, headset mic test for YouTube Vlogging
This is just one of my personal test videos that I would usually have unlisted, but thought I'd make this one public as it may be useful for others to see the results of some of my tests with some cheap budget video filming equipment.
The lights I'm testing are two typical cheap Chinese mass produced ones. They are rated at 130W each of light, although they only draw about 50W. Although they may not be as powerful as advertised, they create a lot of light and are great for what I'm doing in the video. What's even better is that the pair together only use about 1KW of mains power for about 10 hours use. They are also rated at 5500 Kelvin which is great if you want white daylight.
They only cost me £30 from eBay, there are many similar ones on Amazon as well, although the price really does fluctuate on these. You'd be safe in budgeting about £40 or $50 for a pair. Check below for some links.
The mics are also very cheap, one cost £1, the other was £2. I'm still testing a whole bunch of cheap Chinese lavs and headsets, but so far, these two have stood out. The sound is great on them, voices are full and rich and they're very quiet. If you don't mind wearing headset microphones for pieces to camera, vlogging, youtube video production etc. or even off camera dialogue and voice recording/dubbing/overdubs/narration. Then these mics are awesome and will only be beaten by pro mics costing hundreds of £s and $s Again, check the links, I'll update the links as I find any to add to it.
The stand system is a simple two light stand setup with a telescopic cross bar. It can go to about 3 meters wide and about 2 meters high. It cost me £30, again, prices vary but check the links below.
The background screens actually came with another cheap stand setup, and both of them were an extra £5 addition to the stands.
I'll put some links below and add to it if I come across others.
Now, I know what many people will be thinking, 'cheap Chinese crap'. Well, if you like the look and sound of these tests and you're looking for equipment that will stay fairly static and not be moved too much. Then all these things that I've tested would be great additions to any static studio video shooting setup. If you're out on the road, constantly rigging and de-rigging and throwing kit about, then this type of equipment wouldn't do.
The main camera is a Sony AX100 shooting in 4K UHD, the cutaways are from a GoPro Hero 3+ camcorder shot in 2.7K, and edited in HD 1080P. In the edit I've not gained or touched the audio in any way or touched the pictures on the cameras. So no grading or mixing, which will give a better idea of the raw quality of the equipment used.
Checkout these links if you're interested in the equipment I use to produce my videos.
