Cherry Trail x5-8500 Gaming vs. Bay Trail Gaming: Fallout New Vegas. Kangaroo PC vs X205TA
Cherry Trail x5-8500 Gaming vs. Bay Trail Gaming: Fallout New Vegas. Kangaroo PC vs X205TA. After spending some time with the $99 Kangaroo Mobile / Mini PC and it's Gaming performance, and doing research online, it appears that there is a fairly common problem with heavy throttling on CPU speed for the Cherry Trail based tablets - and Braswell ( N3050 ) devices. These CPU replacement for the tablet and laptop PCs have a smaller die size (14nm) than the bay trail CPUs (22nm). What that means is that they have less surface area to dissipate heat - and they generate a lot of heat!
So far, the PCs I have been investigating all have passive non-fan cooling systems. When under a heavy processor load, the throttling causes the CPUs to drop out of turbo, and keep dropping until it hits under 500Mhz - resulting in heavy impacts to processor functions - and specifically for this channel - gaming.
The heavier the game, the more heat, the deeper the cuts to speed.
Fallout New Vegas either matches the speed of the Z3735F bay trail in the x205TA, or drops well below it.
As far as the Cherry Trail CPUs go, they are a processing improvement, however they run too hot to incorporate passive cooling or current passive cooling standards used in the bay trail based devices. A larger surface area cooling block or heatsink, or a tiny fan to blow cool air would work here.
Of note, Intel is replacing the current Cherry Trail and Braswell CPUs with revised versions which include some error fixes and slightly higher clock speeds. It remains to be seen whether they will come to market with better cooling solutions then we currently have here.
The Infocus Kangaroo PC is a great idea with a wonderful selection of features, unfortunately.... unless you are surfing the net, watching youtube or working with MS Office type apps, it is crippled with the overheating and throttling problems which are being noted in other cherry trail or braswell based machines.
