Thanks for watching the latest Blues on a Bench video!
I've set myself some parameters to create this series:
They will always be composed, filmed and transcribed by me, in one day.
There will be a new key for each video following the pattern - C, A, G, E, D
I plan to always film them sitting on a bench, the sun is definitely making its way back lately, so soon I'll be back outside!

This is the 17th study! The fourth in A.
Playing notes and influences:
The mighty Chet Atkins, 'Mr Guitar', 'The Country Gentleman', revolutionised country guitar playing with his ability to play melody, chords, and rhythm all on one instrument. His influences included Merle Travis, and this picking style is named after him.
The approach is to alternate your thumb on either octaves of the root note, or 5ths (depending on what string you start on) and play melody and chord tones above the bass motion, using predominantly your index and middle finger on the right hand. It's a style that opens up a lot of possibilities and is a staple of artists like Tommy Emmanuel (& his many clones), Chet Atkins, Lindsey Buckingham, Leo Kottke and Kelly Joe Phelps.
We're in A minor for this one, taking influence from one of my favourite Chet pieces - Windy & Warm.
The trick to getting this to sound good is to keep your thumb steady - it really is make or break!
There are some barre chords in this which need firm fretting as they make up part of the melody in the B section.
I wanted to give the piece a familiar ending- if you know what it is stick it in the comments. Ha.
