CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS (10-14-2) at TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS (18-8-2) 12/11/2021 FULL GAME LIVE REACTION

The Maple Leafs and Blackhawks meet for the second and final time, and you remember what happened in the first meeting: Down 2-0 after the first period against a Chicago team that had not held a lead in the season to that point, the Leafs rallied to win. A Leafs loss that night might have resulted in job losses, as Toronto had just two wins previously; the Hawks lost four of their next five and coach Jeremy Colliton was fired. Toronto is better now, Chicago not as much.
Petr Mrázek, Jake Muzzin and Justin Holl have something in common as the Leafs host the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. The three will have to step up as the Leafs look for a rebound game after a turnover-plagued loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Mrázek will return to the Leafs goal, barring any setbacks after Friday’s full workout. Troubled by groin issues, he has played in just two games this season.
“Our intent is for him to play,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “(Friday) was another full practice for him, so as long as he gets through (Saturday’s) morning skate the way he feels now, the plan will be to activate him to play him … but he has to get to that point.”
Keefe also referred to Muzzin and Holl as big-minute defencemen after they had a tough night Thursday, on the ice for three Tampa Bay goals, one on the power play, before the head coach split them up in the second period.
Keefe kept them apart Friday. While he talked about how tough nights will happen given how much ice time Muzzin and Holl see against top forwards, his shutdown pairing can’t be a three-goal liability.
“I guess the biggest thing is (Holl) getting back to his game, which for me is utilizing his speed and his length to close on people, and on offence, using his speed and reach to get out of trouble and move the puck quickly to the forwards,” Keefe said. “Right now, it’s in his head a bit, when the season isn’t going the way you want it to. But he’s an important player … who takes on a lot of difficult minutes for us.”
The forwards did not help Holl and Muzzin in Thursday’s game and Keefe wants them to play with more speed in the defensive half of the ice, leading to better puck decisions from his blueliners.
The Leafs, with Jack Campbell in goal, have allowed four or more goals in consecutive games for the first time this season. Campbell has performed well above expectations in his first full season as a starter, but he has fallen from first in the league in save percentage to third, at .935.
