Chrono Cross (クロノ・クロス) is a 1999 RPG developed and published by Square (now © Square Enix) for the PlayStation. You control Serge, navigating the game world on foot and by boat. The overworld map shows the landscape from an overhead view, while locations like cities and forests are shown with more detailed maps where players can talk to locals, find items, solve puzzles, and encounter enemies. Like Chrono Trigger, there are no random encounters; enemies are visible on the field maps or ambush the party. With over 40 party members, the game weaves a complex story involving different people and dimensions. Join Serge and his companions in a timeless adventure and prepare for an epic battle that transcends space and time.
The story of Chrono Cross follows a teenage boy named Serge and explores the theme of parallel worlds. Serge discovers an alternate reality where he died as a child and sets out to find the truth behind the divergence of these two worlds. He is joined by the flashy thief Kid and forty-three other characters who help him in his journey across the tropical archipelago of El Nido. His main arch enemy is Lynx, a shadowy antagonist trying to capture him. The game was primarily designed by Masato Kato, who also worked on Xenogears. Other key team members included designers from Chrono Trigger, such as art director Yasuyuki Honne and composer Yasunori Mitsuda, with Nobuteru Yūki designing the characters.
