Lavos Spawns are easy, except when you have the party of Magus, Lucca, and Marle, like I did with the 3rd Lavos Spawn.
I highly recommend having Frog, Ayla, or Robo in your party, as they're very good damage dealers to the Lavos Spawns, and they're easy with them. The shell will automatically counterattack if it is attacked, so the head is the main priority. The shell has tough defense too, so don't bother attacking it.
