Recap: Using the time gate at the fairgrounds, the party returns to 600 A.D with a plan to fight Magus and stop Lavos from being summoned. Magus's army has advanced and taken Zenan Bridge, and the king was wounded in combat. A boy wearing the legendary Hero's Medal has appeared, and the kingdom is pinning all of their hopes on him. It's said that only the sword of legend, the Masamune, can defeat Magus, and the hero is said to be searching for it in the south. Crono's party assists with defense at Zenan Bridge, successfully breaking through and opening the way to the southern continent.

In a forest, they happen upon the dwelling of Frog, who is still in exile and believes he can do nothing about the ongoing war. Leaving Frog for now, they learn that the hero is a boy named Tata from Porre village. They bump into him as he flees the Denadoro mountain range, declaring that it's a terrible place and that they should run away. They climb the mountain, finding the Masamune at the summit. Two spiritual guardians test their strength before they can approach it, and when they get close, they find that it's just a broken blade.

Taking it along, they return to Porre, and find that Tata has thrown away his Hero Medal, saying he found it on the ground when "some frog guy" dropped it, and doesn't deserve it. After showing the medal to Frog, he reveals that he has the other broken half of the Masamune, but he thinks there's no one who can repair it. Strangely, the sword has Melchior's name engraved on it, so they take it to him in 1000 A.D. Melchior says he could repair the sword if he had Dreamstone, an ancient red rock that was once used as currency, but it hasn't been available for a very long time.

In search of Dreamstone, the party takes the time gate that leads to the farthest past, 65,000,000 B.C. They land in the middle of a battle between a woman and a group of half-human half-dinosaur creatures called Reptites. Impressed with their battle skills, the woman introduces herself as Ayla, the chief of the nearby Ioka village. The people throw a party for the arrival of the new guests, which lasts late into the night. During the party, Ayla relays that they've been in a war with Azala, the leader of the Reptites, for some time. Ioka village fights them directly, while Laruba village hides in the woods. As it happens, Ayla is in possession of the Dreamstone, and challenges Crono to an eating contest for it. He wins, and she agrees to give him the stone.

In the morning, the meeting site is full of footprints, and the Gate Key is missing. Ayla declares that the Reptites must have stolen the key, and insists on going together to take the fight to them. Someone says they saw Reptites heading toward the Forest Maze in the south, and Ayla's friend Kino is also missing from the village. Kino is found at the entrance to the forest, and admits that he took the Gate Key himself out of jealousy. However, Reptites took it from him and ran off. Kino returns to the village while Ayla and Crono press onward through the forest.
