Recap: Chasing after Azala, the party enters the Reptites' lair on the other side of the forest maze. They catch up with Azala holding the Gate Key, and he demands to know what it is, summoning a brute named Nizbel to loosen their tongues. Nizbel is defeated, and Azala retreats with some vague threats, dropping the key, which appears to still be intact. They say their goodbyes to Ayla and return to the present with the Dreamstone.

Melchior is able to use the stone to repair the Masamune, which they bring to Frog in the middle ages. Frog recalls events 10 years ago, when he and his friend Cyrus took the Hero Medal from the Frog King before Cyrus was struck down by Magus, who also changed his form from human to frog. Making his decision, Frog accepts the Masamune and joins the party to take the fight to Magus.

Making their way to Magus's castle, they find a lurid, eerily silent atmosphere inside. Ghostly apparitions of people appear in the halls, some taking the form of old friends. They eventually encounter Ozzie, Flea, and Slash, Magus's henchmen. Flea and Slash are defeated, and they chase Ozzie deep into the castle as he activates various traps behind him, eventually finding a way to drop him through a trapdoor of his own creation.

Eventually they confront Magus, interrupting him in the middle of a ritual. After a long fight, as Magus appears to be losing, a disruption from Lavos appears to interrupt the battle. The party is surprised to learn that Magus isn't ready for him to wake up, and that he only summoned him from where he had been sleeping deep within the earth gathering power for a long time. A huge time gate appears, drawing everyone in, as Lavos's roar is heard.

Crono's party awakens in the prehistoric era, with serious wounds being tended by Ayla. They had all appeared at Mystic Mountain, but Magus was nowhere to be found. After a rest, Kino arrives, reporting that Ayla is out looking for Laruba village to gather troops for the Reptite war. A villager comes in with news that the north wood, where Laruba village hides, is on fire.
