CiB Game Boy Theater - Nigel Mansell Racing and Batman: Return of the Joker (Episode 73)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
Oh sweet, another racing game where they tried really, really hard to make it realistic, but they only ended up making the game no fun. I really respect what they tried to do, but we've seen it over and over again - simple games tend to be fun on the Game Boy, and realistic games tend to... not be fun. There certainly are a lot of choices and details here, and maybe racing fans love this game. I'm not a racing fan, so it's a hard pass.
The original Batman game (seen on Episode 68) was a surprisingly fun review. Although the sprites were very small and chibi, it was a simple game and... well hey, look at the paragraph above! Batman: Return of the Joker is still overall a solid game (as made famous by AVGN), but there is one fatal flaw - the difficulty. I don't expect to - beat- games when I quickly review them for Game Boy Theater, but I certainly don't expect to not even make it to a SINGLE BOSS (or end of level), and I sure ain't gonna practice this for hours on end so I can. Good game - too hard. Thanks for watching!
