CiB Game Boy Theater - Spot and Amazing Penguin (Episode 75)
The Original Game Boy is one of the biggest 'game changers' in the history of video games, and essentially ushered in the popularity of handheld games. There are many games that will be classic forever. There are, however, a much, much higher number of simply awful, forgettable, or downright weird games. CiB Game Boy Theater shows you some of the games you might not (and shouldn't be...) familiar with.
First we have Spot, based on Cool Spot, the radical 90s... uh, poker chip, that promoted 7up. The SNES/Genesis Spot games were actually pretty solid, if unremarkable platformers, and that is definitely what I expected. A platformer is not what I got. I got another puzzle game. Spot is the game 'Reversi'. WHAT does this have to do with Spot, besides having his image on the side? Another Game Boy game, another puzzle game. NEXT!
We got Amazing Penguin traded in for the first time the other day. I thought 'this game looks cool, and it's made by Natsume!' I was ready for a solid platformer and... it's another puzzle game. Kind of ironic, putting Spot with Amazing Penguin in the same episode. This is, by far, our shortest Game Boy Theater, and thank goodness. I couldn't deal with more than 5 minutes of disappointment. Thanks for watching!
