CiB Let's Try - The Pirates of Dark Water (SNES)
The Pirates of Dark Water was released in May 1994 as a Super Nintendo exclusive. It was developed and published by Sunsoft (Sun Corporation).
As discussed by the channel 'SNES Drunk', there is an interesting amount of SNES games based on rather short-lived Saturday morning cartoons. Pirates of Dark Water only had 21 episodes -- a few other examples, Widget (65 episodes, though not commonly remembered), King Arthur and the Knights of Justice (26 episodes), Family Dog (10 episodes), and Biker Mice From Mars (65 episodes).
As always, the story behind the game is potentially more exciting than the story about the game itself - Pirates of Dark Water is an above average beat 'em up, one that controls very well, but very quickly outlives its welcome. This whole video is only about 22 minutes long, and I was pretty done with the game after 2 stages. It is -extremely difficult to make beat 'em ups that keep things fresh the entire time -- and unfortunately Turtles in Time is the high-water mark that I keep comparing them all to.
Regardless, this is a pretty solid game, and if you've played all the well-known beat 'em ups for the SNES and are looking for a new game, this one will be worth your time -- just maybe not the price of admission for the actual cartridge. Thanks for watching!
