Achievement: Moving Up In The World
Description: Earn your first S-rank medal
So if you've been having trouble getting your first S-rank in Cloudbuilt, you've probably looked around youtube and found a bunch of S-rank videos... most of which feature fairly advanced techniques and tricks.
But don't worry... you won't have to master those advanced techniques in order to get your first S-rank! In fact, if you're an Intermediate-level player (i.e. you've been getting mostly C-ranks, with some D-ranks on the harder levels, and at least one or two B-or-A-ranks on the easier levels), you'll probably be able to get your first S-rank by learning (and practicing) just a few Intermediate-level techniques:
1) Jump-dash-jump: Immediately after a forward jump, dash, then immediately jump again. This technique is extremely useful for Intermediate-level players because it's fairly easy to execute, and it gives you a pretty good amount of distance for less than half of your energy meter.
2) Jump-dash-jump-dash: As you've probably guessed, after a jump-dash-jump, dash again. =) This technique uses a lot of energy, but will get you further than the jump-dash-jump.
3) Jump-dash into wall runs: If you jump then dash onto a wall, your wall run will be faster than if you just jump directly onto the wall. This works for both horizontal and vertical wall runs.
- To start a horizontal wall run, just jump-dash in the direction you want to wall run (this also works when going from one wall to another).
- To start a vertical wall run, jump-dash directly at the wall, but angle the camera view slightly upwards.
4) Renew your horizontal wall run speed: Your jump-dash wall run speed will slowly decrease during a horizontal wall run, so if there isn't another wall to jump-dash to... you can actually jump-dash to the same wall! After jumping off the wall, point the camera view back towards the wall and dash... and if you did this correctly, you'll once again be going about as fast as you were at the beginning of your wall run. =)
As far as what level to do for your first S-rank, I'd probably recommend The Initial Entry, because it's a relatively straightforward level that you're probably already familiar with. To get an S-rank on The Initial Entry, you will need to get a time faster than: 01:16.00
In this video, I've demonstrated one way to use the above techniques to get an S-rank on The Initial Entry. There are, of course, other faster ways, but if you're just trying to get your first S-rank, a simpler method like this is both easier to learn, and definitely fast enough (even if you make a minor mistake or two like I did in this video) to get you your first S-rank. =)
Some notes, extra info, and possible points of interest:
0:10 For instructional purposes: 3 jump-dashes, 3 jump-dash-jumps, and 3 jump-dash-jump-dashes, so you can see about how far each will take you, and about how much energy each uses. You can practice these by resetting the level (defaults to the "L" key, I think) after each try.
0:45 At the beginning of the level, the timer will not start until you do something (other than moving the camera around), so take as much time as you need before you begin.
0:53 Wait for your energy to recharge a bit, then from near the back of the platform, do a jump-dash-jump. If you have trouble clearing the wall, aim the camera slightly higher during the jump-dash-jump.
1:01 A jump-dash-jump should get you to the energy.
1:13 Renew wall run speed by jump-dashing onto the same wall.
1:23 Yes, you can dash sideways. =) I find it easier here to dash sideways then turn left, instead of turning to the side, dashing forward, then turning all the way around.
1:27 Three ground dashes (just dash without jumping first) followed by a jump-dash-jump.
1:39 I accidentally went too high and hit the spikes, but it didn't affect my time too much.
1:59 There are faster ways down the ramp, but if you just want to slide at normal speed, you should be able to clear a path with blue shots as you slide.
If you find you still need to save a little more time, just do things like replacing some running sections with ground dashes instead, and look for similar ways to save a little time here and there along the way. And keep practicing. Especially the wall run techniques, which can save a lot of time if you do them right!
And that's it! Hopefully this will help you get your first S-rank! Good luck!
