In 2096 humanity has moved on! The end. Oh wait no, that's not the end, not all of humanity has moved on (contrary to the manual), but is scattered across the solar system. Apparently Earth has become a polluted hellhole and people work hard to escape to the paradise of the outer colonies. Playing as Tenka, you find out this is not the case at all; the colonies are hellholes in their own right and one wants to make you into a cyborg to join a Bionoid army. So you take up arms to protect yourself and take down the Bionoids! In the game storyline it sounds like Tenka also had his brain scrambled a bit, as he sounds like doomguy from the fan comics. In a way Tenka shows the fancomic "rip and tear" guy is a bit cheesier than we would think if he had voice lines. Maybe that is why the story of Doom Eternal didn't do it for me!

The multicolored dithered graphics of Codename: Tenka on the Playstation is pretty cool! I hear the devs at Psygnosis struggled with the texture warping which plagued FPS games on the system, but it adds an interesting warping effect going through doors. I can see the devs had a hard time getting all of the controls on the original Playstation controller layout too. There's moving, shooting, strafing, looking up and down, items, jumping, and ducking. Keep in mind this is before the Playstation had dual analog sticks and also before modern FPS controller layouts. Because of this I have to hold a button down to do strafing and circle strafing is impossible. The alternate controller layouts don't seem to make this possible. I think strafing could have been made much easier if they got rid of jumping and made ducking automated by floor shafts, then left and right strafe could have had dedicated buttons. But we'll see if jumping becomes more of a necessity later on.

I didn't realize I had to shoot the green cylinder thing in the first level, as it seems to take a lot of bullets! But eventually I did figure it out. By the end of the second level it looks like the environments are about to change, so I am looking forward to that! Maybe I will get some more varied weapons too?
