FRESH MEAT
First up in Fresh Meat, it's The Shallows making, well, "fresh meat" out of Blake Lively. The Shallows, the Black List ranked script which sees Lively as a lone surfer stranded 200 yards from shore with a great white in her path, released its final trailer as well as two clips including the beginnings of the attack in question. The Shallows, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, hits theaters on June 28.
Have you heard of The Greasy Strangler? Oh boy, genre fans, if you haven't yet, you sure won't forget, and believe me, this won't be the last time. The latest from Elijah Wood's (yes really!) horror production company SpectreVision, The Greasy Strangler got its first and VERY not safe for work teaser trailer plus a release date last week. Called "2016's most WTF movie" by The Daily Beast, the Sundance selection hits limited theaters and VOD on October 7.
Shane Black is no stranger to genre. While he's mostly been known for his comedy favorites like The Nice Guys and Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, plus a little movie called Iron Man 3, Black is re-teaming with his Monster Squad co-writer Fred Dekker to write and direct Predator 4, titled The Predator, expected to begin shooting later this year. While he's certainly been talking a lot about his plans for the film, Black recently told IGN that Ridley Scott's Alien has been a major influence on the project. Black also revealed on the Empire podcast that he is looking to early Steven Spielberg as an influence.
After briefly returning to video games in Mortal Kombat X, Jason Voorhese is coming home for real. During E3 yesterday, five minutes of alpha footage made its way online showing off the new endeavor and revealing that gamers can play as both scared teenagers and Jason himself. According to Bloody Disgusting, Friday the 13th: The Game releases this fall for PC, PS4 and XBO.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?!
The thing that gave all of us the feels and got a lot of you talking, Netflix released the trailer for The Duffer Brothers new genre series, Stranger Things. Starring Wynona Rider, David Harbor, Matthew Modine and a slew of ridiculously talented children, Stranger Things is "A love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80's, it's the story of a young boy who vanishes into thin air. As friends, family and local police search for answers, they are drawn into an extraordinary mystery involving top-secret government experiments, terrifying supernatural forces and one very strange little girl."
Recently it was announced that Fox would order a television adaptation of William Peter Blatty's iconic novel The Exorcist to series. Starring Oscar winner Geena Davis paired with Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt for the pilot episode, the trades reported that Alan Ruck would be made a series regular. Ruck will play the Rance family patriarch, "Once a successful civil engineer, Henry suffered a traumatic accident that left him permanently impaired. Now he finds himself a prisoner inside his own body, frustrated by his lack of progress and his inability to help his family in their time of need.
JUMP SCARES
This week the Eli Roth produced Clown hits select theaters and VOD and was directed by none other than Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts. Watts is the latest in a long line of genre directors who Hollywood studios have snapped up to spearhead big budget superhero movies.
