Command & Conquer (1995) · Original Soundtrack · MS-DOS / Windows
Command & Conquer, also known as Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn, is a real-time strategy video game developed and published by Westwood Studios in 1995. Set in an alternate history, the game plunges you into a world war between two formidable globalized factions: the United Nations' Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and the revolutionary militant organization known as the Brotherhood of Nod, led by the enigmatic Kane. Westwood Studios conceived this title during the final stages of Dune II's development, expanding upon concepts explored in their earlier work. The team drew inspiration from real-world events, particularly the Gulf War, to craft its compelling modern warfare setting.
The core gameplay revolves around you operating as one of the two factions, establishing bases, gathering the unique resource Tiberium, and utilizing it to produce troops and ultimately defeat your adversary by eliminating their army or capturing their base. Each faction boasts distinct unit types, a unique superweapon, and a particular combat philosophy: GDI favors superior firepower and armor, while Nod leans into numerical superiority, speed, and unconventional tactics. Constructing your base begins with a Mobile Construction Vehicle (MCV), with structures requiring close proximity to each other, and defensive measures like sandbags and gun turrets being essential for protection. A tech tree system dictates which advanced units and structures become available as you progress.
The game offers two single-player campaigns, one for each faction, where you undertake a series of missions across a campaign map. Missions typically involve destroying enemy units or seizing their buildings, with briefings delivered through a mix of computer animations and live-action full motion video (FMV) cutscenes. Notably, the live-action cutscenes feature Westwood employees and Joseph D. Kucan, the professional actor who portrays Kane. The original DOS release supported multiplayer for up to four, a rare feature at the time. While console ports like the Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions lacked multiplayer, they often included additional single-player content or updated graphics, as seen in the Nintendo 64 rendition.
The compelling soundtrack, a hallmark of Westwood's titles, was composed by Frank Klepacki.
In 2007, Command & Conquer: Gold was released as freeware. Paired with the release of Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, EA also released the source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License in 2020.
