SkyRoads (1993) · Original Production Soundtrack · MS-DOS
SkyRoads, a racing puzzle game developed by Bluemoon Software and released in 1993, challenges you to navigate a spaceship along treacherous roads in space. The objective is to reach the end of each road while avoiding walls, staying on track, and managing your oxygen supply. With 30 progressively difficult roads, the game starts simple but becomes increasingly complex, offering a variety of road types such as speed up, slow down, death, slippery, and supply roads that add layers of challenge.
Originally inspired by an earlier game called Kosmonaut, SkyRoads achieved commercial success, leading to the release of SkyRoads Xmas Special in 1994. This special edition introduced 30 new roads and some altered backgrounds but retained the same interface, controls, and music as the original. Both versions of the game are available for free download on Bluemoon Interactive's website, allowing new generations to experience this classic.
The game's design is visually engaging, with each road set against different cosmic backdrops, enhancing the immersive experience. As you progress, the game demands quicker reflexes and sharper decision-making skills, making it a thrilling adventure through space. The controls are intuitive, allowing for easy pickup and play, but mastering the game requires practice and perseverance.
The game's aesthetic, combined with its challenging gameplay, makes it a memorable experience. The soundtrack, composed by Ott Aaloe, complements the gameplay perfectly, with each track enhancing the atmosphere of the different roads.
In this video, you hear the original music during production, not the in-game music. All music, except for the intro composed by Hasso Brück, was produced on an Amiga computer using a program called Oktalyzer. Initially, all FM sounds were converted to samples, tunes were produced, and later, note data from the module was used to play back ordinary FM sounds. Due to the FM to sample conversion, the music sounded quite different during production compared to the actual game. Some instruments, especially percussions, sounded completely different; for instance, in the game version of Road 5, percussions are inaudible, making it a completely different tune. Additionally, for an unknown reason, the game versions sound a half tone higher.
