Command & Conquer - The Defining Game of the RTS Genre
3Command & Conquer was the first real RTS I played, and without a doubt it was the game that defined the Real Time Strategy Genre. The game was the first to feature factions that had unique strengths and weaknesses, without the flavoring that was apparent in Warcraft and Dune. I sunk many hours into playing Command & Conquer and it's prequel: Command & Conquer Red Alert.
The C&C Demo features a few missions from the GDI campaign, and it gives a nice overview of what the gameplay was like.
It should be noted that Command & Conquer, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, and Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun are now Freeware. You can find places to download the games on the net since Electronic Arts has released these old games into the Public Domain.
