Starcraft Demo - The Ultimate RTS of its Time
6Starcraft was without a doubt a 'step up' from the rest of the other RTS of its time, and coupled with Battle.net you could play it online against others as well. Blizzard had outdone themselves in the RTS Rivalry to make a game with 3 factions that were completely different from each other and required different strategies to manage and combat.
I personally played a lot of the game on Custom Maps myself, but the single player campaigns and general gameplay was good too. The Starcraft Demo as well is a prequel to the game, so the content here is actually different them the starter missions for the Terrans in the retail versions. In fact, you could even design your own missions and maps with Starcraft, one of the reasons it was such an awesome game in its time.
