I've been on a serious retro kick lately. For the last month I have watched dozens of silent films, reads tons of Silver age/WWII comics and started playing all the old Atari games. I have no idea why, but here I am.
So to compliment that weird habit lately, I played through Commando for the Atari 7800. This isn't my typical genre, but of the run and gun games out there, Commando is one of the better ones in the genre. Originally an arcade title, it has been released on just about every Console imaginable at the time. This led to some not so great ports, like the Atari 2600 and Intellivision versions.
The Atari 7800 version is a passable port for the time. The controls are kind of garbage, there's only one real power up and all the hidden rooms have been removed, but it's fine. I mean, sure, you can just run straight through the stage and ignore everyone attacking and the music feels like a brain needle until you've died enough times that the brain needle becomes a part of your mind and lives inside your head forever, but it's fine. The colors are dull, bullets are slow, the movement and controls are stilted (yes, worth mentioning twice), but it's....
No, it's kind of garbage, it's only fine in context with the rest of the Atari 7800s library. If I beat another 7800 title, I will share some history about that half aborted mistake of a console.
