Ending # 92
The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening
Developer: Nintendo
Publisher: Nintendo
Gameboy Color
1993 / 1998

What originally began as an after-hours side project of the development staff of "A Link to the Past" became of one of Gameboy's most critically acclaimed best sellers. I think it's OK.

To clarify a bit.. I'm glad I played it and beat it (twice now), but I don't know if I would ever come back to it...though I may have said that after the first time I played, too. Originally I completed it on the Gameboy, so playing the DX color version seemed justified, for my golden list and for a video.

The music is done very well, impressive for the time when most Gameboy soundtracks sounded like a chiptune thrown into a food processor. Tal Tal Heights is my favorite pieces from the soundtrack. It brings me colorful images of a Pony Express rider traveling through badlands to deliver post.

Speaking of colorful, the Gameboy Color version was a delight to play. The new dungeon was fun and the camera shop mouse took cute pictures, but that felt gimmicky, since it was added to promote the Gameboy printer. You know, my video game collection would be a lot nicer (read: easier to complete) if Nintendo didn't release so many pointless peripherals.

The final battle was not done with finesse. I had played the game almost from start to finish with very little downtime, so by the time I got to the last boss, I was tired of playing and just wanted to beat him quickly. Which I did, without even using the my recovery potion. After all that work, I was treated to a pants wearing, shawl covered, doily clad old whale who did nothing for me but laugh as he flew by the flotsam to let me die in open ocean.

That's the real ending they don't show.
