Creatures - developed by Apex Computer Productions (ACP) and published by Thalamus in 1990 for the Commodore 64. Also released for the Atari ST in 1992 and Amiga in 1993.

"TO THE RESCUE! - Held in devilish torture chambers, an entire village of Fuzzy Wuzzies - the cutest but most mischievous characters ever - need your help! Control the only free Fuzzy, Clyde Radcliff, on a mission that takes him through the haunted Black Forest of Gateau, to a land full of crazy creatures, scuba diving in piranha ponds and into the lethal torture chambers themselves! You need quick reactions, a sharp brain and a crazy sense of humor to complete the cartoon game of the year - Creatures!"

The Rowland Brothers are back again to bring us possibly the best game of 1990 on the Commodore64. Oozing with Thalamus presentation traits, large colourful gfx, a full soundtrack and gameplay that stood out above anything on the C64 at this time. When the game came out it made me think that this is it, the peak of what the C64 hardware could do. All those demoscene tricks put into a game. All heavily inspired by what was coming out on consoles of the time i'm sure. To this day it is one of my most fondly remembered games on the C64 CREATURES is an abbreviation of "Clyde Radcliff Exterminates All The Unfriendly Repulsive Earthridden Slime"

The game starts out as a normal platform affair, although I can't think of any similar game of the time on the c64. You navigate around the levels destroying creatures and collecting magic items. I did try to collect all but I noticed I missed some. Also some creatures and magic items can be manipulated to reveal ...even more magic items. Some I show and others I missed. Some I remember but couldn't recall how to reveal. At the end of each stage is a little boss battle. Between levels you get to visit the magic shop where you can trade magical creatures for weapons and upgrades. Each weapon can be upgraded multiple times (red, green and blue representing Retrograde .. :) All weapons are useful to have except for the Scatter Ball which is the most expensive item and more of a trap to waste points on. You can also buy information on how to defeat the next torture chamber.

Once two levels are completed you get to a torture chamber where you must rescue the Fuzzy Wuzzy. These chambers are the main draw of the game and used in the demo if I recall right. I'm not sure if there was anything else like them before or since. While not overly complicated, it is important to have the right weapon to make them as quick as possible so that you are not fighting the clock. Once completed you move onto the next part of the island. Once all three areas are completed and all fuzzies rescued you win the game and the ending is shown. Such a great game from start to finish. I let the music play on the first level of each island and then show the sfx on the second. At the end of the video I show the torture screens where the Fuzzy Wuzzy doesn't make it and they don't go quickly. The game was later ported to the Atari St and Amiga but something got lost in the translation and the 16 bit versions lost the magic and was no longer special and didn't stand out on those platforms. I couldn't get past the art style let alone how it played.
