I took a course on composition recently, and this was my first assignment.

The restrictions of this assignment were that it needed to be for a solo instrument (I believe piano was discouraged), in ternary form, exploring fast/slow rhythm/tempi or high/low register, and all be contained within 1 minute.

Originally it was going to be for xylophone, but I realized that I'd need to physically get a xylophone to present my piece, so instead I rewrote it for violin and my professor played it.

It's a really simple piece. I told myself I wouldn't write for the same instrument twice, nor would I stray from functional harmony during the course. Of course I eventually had to, as the assignment guidelines got weirder.

Due to not having several live performers, my third of four etudes (unrelated to this video) for the course cannot have a midi realization as it's all about extended techniques and I was unhinged enough to turn the tuba and human voice into percussion instruments.
