[Congestion 1024] MAP23: Close Quarters (UV-Max Demo)
oh this level was an adventure. and not the fun kind. starting it up i noticed there was oddly no midi... and then the game just kind of stopped. flipping over to the terminal it was running in i saw thousands of fluidsynth errors getting printed. in theory i could have tried to figure out what was wrong with the midi, but i'm not too familiar with the format unfortunately, and i wasn't particularly inclined to figure it out in the moment. so i slapped in the plutonia midi pack into the load order and that sorted it out. plug ugly is a great track anyway.
second problem: there are two secrets in this level, and neither one is obtainable. the first is the berserk pack behind the hitler portrait; i don't even think you can get that unless you somehow manage to do a perfect strafe run into a bump somehow. the other is the bfg obtained later in the level; in this case the secret is just too small to actually register properly. also you can't get max kills either as one imp won't teleport in.
thirdly: the combat is sometimes well put together, but there are some very unpredictable teleport ambushes that i really don't know what the trigger conditions are. fortunately you can just continue on and force the enemies to funnel through after you. the end of that hallway is also a great place to finish off the cyberdemon instead of trying to go mano-a-mano in the very small courtyard. the enemies around the outside do spice things up quite a bit though, and there are other encounters that work better - the very first one is pretty tricky for example. just feel like this probably needed a second pass to really shine.
