while poking around on doomwiki, as you do, i noticed that the featured article was for crossing acheron as it was its thirtieth anniversary. it's one of those wads i figured i'd check out eventually, but i figured - it's it's thirtieth anniversary and there's no time like the present. doing a bit of research proved interesting as well, as it is second map in a planned 9-map episode replacement. this map, dante's gate, is the first map, which is why i've chosen to play it first. the eight map became e4m7 in ultimate doom; the ninth map was unfortunately never released. all the maps in between that are part of the master levels. i think we'll put those off until... some later point. eventually. i've never played them but they definitely have a reputation.

this level (and crossing acheron) have a number of different versions; i've chosen to play the last released version in each case. the major difference between the earlier versions and this version is that the earlier ones are for doom 1 and these have been converted to work with doom 2, with some additions and modifications to use the new monsters and add a super shotgun.

as far as this map itself goes, it's actually quite nice looking and well put together, with a lot more attention paid to texturing, and especially lighting, than i feel like you'd see in doom or doom 2. the critical path is relatively short, but there's a whole lot extra to explore, including the whole western wing with the archvile and bfg. the traps can get pretty creative, although the monster count isn't huge or anything. there's even a trap that cuts the lights when triggered, which is the sort of linedef special i feel like got rarely used in the actual iwads. a few things didn't hold up as well though; the crushers, and the somewhat arbitrary way they start and stop, take some getting used to, and that extends to a couple of lifts as well. and a lot of the secrets are pretty obtuse and not really signposted in any way. but overall i had a surprisingly good time with a level from the very first year of user maps.
