Constitution Day is an American holiday observed to mark the ratification of the U.S. Constitution and to celebrate citizenship. The holiday, which is also known as "Citizens Day," is traditionally observed annually on September 17 - the day the U.S. Constitution was signed by 39 founding fathers back in 1787.
In 2010, Constitution Day will be observed on Friday, September 17. Several events were planned nationwide to mark the holiday, including observances at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. The Center is located "steps away" from Independence Hall, where the founding fathers signed the Constitution.
Teachers in public schools all over the country will no doubt be putting together lesson plans to teach children about the U.S. Constitution on Constitution Day. In 2004, the year Constitution Day was officially designated via an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, federal lawmakers also issued a mandate for the "teaching of the Constitution in schools that receive federal funds."
The National Constitution Center offers resources for teachers' lesson plans on its website. Information and suggestions are available for teaching kids from elementary to high school. Resources include interactive games and general facts and information about the U.S. Constitution and the founding fathers.
How will you celebrate this Constitution Day? While Constitution Day is a federal observance, it is not officially a federal holiday - meaning no day off for federal workers.
