''The Town'' is a crime drama movie that opens in U.S. theaters on September 17, 2010.  In ''The Town,'' Ben Affleck stars as Doug MacRay, the leader of a Boston-area band of bank robbers.  Affleck also co-wrote and directed ''The Town.''  He also directed another crime drama based on a novel, 2007's ''Gone Baby Gone.''  ''The Town'' is an adaptation of the 2004 novel ''The Prince of Thieves'' by Chuck Hogan.  ''The Town'' also stars Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively and Chris Cooper.

Reviews for ''The Town'' began coming out several days before the movie's release.  Overall, reviews were favorable.  ''The Town'' garnered an 82 percent "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes' "Tomatometer" on September 15, 2010, and scored a 72 out of 100 on Metacritic.com.

Many critics praised Ben Affleck's behind-the-camera talents, which he exhibited in his directorial debut: 2007's ''Gone Baby Gone'' - another gritty Boston crime drama.  Lisa Schwarzbaum of ''Entertainment Weekly'' says "Affleck the director, it turns out, has a real feel for making movies about atmospheric grit and the collision of urban law, order and disorder."  Justin Chang of ''Variety'' calls Affleck "a fine director of actors," adding that he "delivers another potent, serious-minded slice of pulp set on Boston's meanest streets, where loyalty among thieves runs thicker than blood."  Caryn James of ''Newsweek'' says ''The Town'' "proves that 'Gone Baby Gone'...was no fluke."

Critics also praised the acting in the movie, including the performances by Affleck and Jeremy Renner, but particularly that of Oscar winner Chris Cooper.  David Edelstein of ''New York Magazine'' says "Everyone in 'The Town' shines, even Blake Lively, but it's Chris Cooper as MacRay's imprisoned dad who astounds."

If there is a weakness in ''The Town,'' according to Sheri Linden of ''The Hollywood Reporter,'' it's the story.  Linden says while ''The Town'' is "Steeped in an authentic sense of place, this crime drama is less convincing on the storytelling front."

Bottom line: Affleck's second outing as a director seems to be a hit with many critics.  If you enjoyed ''Gone Baby Gone,'' you may also want to visit ''The Town.''
