First order of business this session is to finish the awful routine I had to go through to bypass the stealth section at Cinder Isles. One of the Slide Reels showed a clear glimpse of the Owls’ attempt to hide the signal from the Eye of the Universe, and at that point it really looked like they thought that preventing anyone from interacting with the Eye would avoid the end of this universe and beginning of the next. I ended up making my way to a structure which seemed to control the device which was blocking the signal, but the structure was pretty worn down and the device controls were flat out incinerated.

Exploring on the opposite side of the Vault from the Eye-blocking device showed the Owls’ initial prototypes and experiments as they developed their virtual world and the fire-containing Artifacts. It’s cool to see some history behind the Artifact, but I sure wish I had discovered that at the start of the DLC.

Eventually I made my way to the Slide-Burning Room for the Hidden Gorge and learned to cross an invisible bridge which will allow me to turn off the lights and begin the final, potentially-most-awful stealth mission to pass behind the Mural and reach the final Forbidden Archive. Unlike the earlier areas where I could wait for the Owls to be kicked out of the virtual world, Hidden Gorge never gets washed away - so it wasn’t looking like I could cheat my way through this one.

Surprisingly, I did manage to find a way around the Owls, but it didn’t involve waiting them out. Instead, I’d create a shortcut by lowering the elevator at Hidden Gorge, turn off the lights in that area, and then re-enter the virtual world via Cinder Isles. Taking the virtual world raft back to the Hidden Gorge area meant I’d arrive right next to the Mural and beyond any of the Owls. I quickly reached the Forbidden Archive, and that basically confirms that each of them documents a different error in the virtual world. Leaving the Artifact’s projection radius is something I had already discovered, but I didn’t quite understand its significance until then.

Combining the different virtual world errors to basically cheat through the system and open the Vault was super cool. I was wondering what the final puzzle would be, and it’s interesting to see it all being in one place rather than the long journey from the base game.

It didn’t occur to me until re-watching this playthrough that the Prisoner is very likely shining their Vision Torch at you from inside when you first try to open the Vault (the green glow peeking at which shows you some basic information). It’s such a neat touch in that it starts out as this mysterious magical feature but ends up with a pretty reasonable explanation and gives you another connection to the Prisoner.

I feel like Echoes of the Eye took quite a lot of time to fully come together - the Slide Reels contain a lot of vague clues about what’s going on but the Owls never get a lot of personality nor insights into the smaller moments as they live their lives, contemplate the Eye, travel to the Hearthians’ system, etc. I miss a lot of the dialogue from the Nomai that helped flesh them out into a robust series of characters.
