Spending Time Inside - Outer Wilds DLC pt.4 (2021-10-05)
0I finally decided to pay really close attention to the times when each of the waking world events occurred - the Dam breaking, the Tower Collapsing, etc. I had noticed that the Owls share the same rule as I do, in that when their fire is snuffed out as the water reaches them, they’re kicked out of the dream world. In my case, it simply brings me back to the waking world - the Owls on the other hand are fully dead.
The trick with the River Lowlands turned out to be opening the shortcut to the raft dock and then arriving at that area from Cinder Isles or the Hidden Gorge. That way I could wait for the Owls’ fires to be extinguished in the River Lowlands so they’d be cleared out and I could explore at my leisure.
Beyond the fireplace in the cabin I discover a hidden area with Slide Reels containing forbidden knowledge, alongside some additional history. It turns out that the Owls completely mined their planet of resources to construct the Stranger and fly out to the Hearthian’s solar system / get closer to the eye.
Of the two reels in the cabin, the second one I viewed was super interesting. The dream world seems to be some sort of virtual construct and you can cause something noteworthy to happen if you hop off the raft in the transition between areas. Hopping off the raft led me to some sort of nexus between areas, and I could even go to the dream world location of the Vault and disable one of its seals.
I eventually worked out that there’s a trio of Slide Burning Rooms containing clues for how to progress through the dream world at each major location and reach the forbidden Slide Reels within. You’re basically trying to extinguish all light in the area, but that also seems to alert the Owls who are quite a pain to sneak around.
