[Cosmo Dreamer/コスモドリーマー] DDBD Trial Mode Expert TLB ALL (Score: 144,734,907,430) [CC Commentary]
Cosmo Dreamer is the game before Like Dreamer, so playing the series feels kinda odd. I was so used to Like Dreamer's Hyper System, I missed its presence. So instead of an SDOJ at home, Cosmo Dreamer is Touhou with CAVE steroids. I love it!
Seems like having the bullet fights happen on another world is a staple of the series. This time it's on Mu's dream! It has the satisfying packages Like Dreamer had, but you can't have the shorter-run Trial. This is the full course 8 stages run! Also the replay, shot type customization, TLB, etc. And also no original music, but personally I find the patterns to be more original aside of some instances, though makes sense since Like Dreamer was more of a Gex-style reference romp.
Your moveset is basically Touhou. You can shoot, rapid, and bomb. That's it. No other flairs like fever / hyper. I don't think any shot types affect your movement speed, but unlike Hazelnut Hex the movement speed is adequate. No complaints about it. In my run I use this DDBD setup. At start you can only access up to C, but 1cc-ing Trial once will unlock the D setups. D is no doubt, the cheat setup. The damage difference compared to the defaults are not that noticeable, but it's noticeable enough that it'll safe up your sanity through the 36-ish minutes of life count check! Not to mention the D augment disables auto-bomb / shield. Ironically though it's better without it, but I'll explain why later.
Like, er, Like Dreamer, the key parts for survival in this game is bomb recharge. You can stockpile up to 3 bombs! Depending on the Style used, auto-bombing will consume all of the bombs. That's not ideal. Plus, manual bombing is much more powerful. Best to use it instead. Plus, there are some grace frames to prevent a miss by pressing the bomb button. Remember it well! But since this game predated Like Dreamer, there is no Fever. So your resources is pretty much more scarce than Like Dreamer. The recharge isn't fast, though. To make it faster, you'll want to pointblank when you can. Remember, bombs over auto-bombs!
Speaking of auto-bombing, there is another reason to not have it active. If you use augment B or C, when you get hit auto-bomb gets activated, but it will deplete ALL OF YOUR BOMB GAUGE. Let's say you get hit when it's 190%. On normal usage it only costs 100%. But on auto-bomb it gets reduced to 0! That long periods of time will likely leave you vulnerable to chain deaths! A will make the auto-bomb consumption into just 100%, but it'll nerve your normal and focus shot, and that's pretty sucky. Not to mention bombs are so rare, if you lose a life the game will only give you a single new one. That's not much! This is where the cursed augment D comes in. It boosts both your normal shot and focus shot, but auto-bomb is disabled. Here is the catch: you do will die when get hit regardless, but the game won't eliminate your existing bombs either. So upon respawning you can spam the bombs you've kept. That's actually more bomb efficient than using B or C! Plus, with good stage knowledge you'll decrease the moments where you need bombs. For this TLB run, I wholeheartedly suggest to use augment D! As scary as it is, it'll be worth it.
Compared to Like Dreamer, Cosmo Dreamer''s patterns feel more original. There are certainly patterns that are callbacks to other games like for the TLB, but the references like winders and such are less obvious. It's surprisingly fresh! The really great thing about Cosmo Dreamer is its nice balance for dodging tactics and shooting tactics with the available shot types in mind. Focus A and C has the piercing property. The sub-parts of the enemies will decrease the main body's HP when destroyed! Well-placed piercings can whittle down certain patterns quickly, but this can sacrifice lock-on or shot width, so this makes shot type consideration feel tangibly important!
And the TLB, like it's sequel... looks like this is a series staple... the TLB is BOMB IMMUNE. At least the patterns are easier to read to bomb out when you need it...
Cosmo Dreamer is certainly also a great package like Like Dreamer! Just be careful if you're planning to chew the TLB on Trial! Speaking of version differences, opinions of its addition will vary, but on denser patterns slowdowns occur. It is unknown if this is by design, or due to the Switch's weaker hardware. At least it's not constant, only for the worst of the patterns like the TLB.
